Abilify is an antipsychotic. This means it can be used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and Tourette syndrome. It can also be used to treat irritability associated with autism.
Abilify can decrease hallucinations and improve concentration, along with helping one think more clearly and positively. Abilify also makes one feel less nervous and take a more active part in everyday life. Abilify can treat severe mood swings and decrease how often mood swings occur.
How it Works
Abilify works by restoring the balance of chemicals in the brain.
Abilify pairs with 5-HT1A to lower the activation energy. 5-HT1A receptor agonists are involved in neuromodulation. They decrease blood pressure and heart rate via a central mechanism, by inducing peripheral vasodilation, and by stimulating the vagus nerve. This in turn calms one down.
Dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, excess saliva/drooling, blurred vision, weight gain, constipation, headache, and trouble sleeping may occur.
